For the fisherman who is looking for something a little different and off the beaten path in Montana we invite you to consider carp on the fly. An often overlooked and maligned fish, the lowly Carp can present some of the most challenging angling scenarios offered by any freshwater species. Carp aren’t just bottom feeders, in fact they are quite selective with a diet not too dissimilar to trout in the rivers in which we pursue them. Although I have guided novice anglers into carp I usually recommend this trip for the more advanced angler. The difficulty in casting, presenting the fly correctly, and enticing an eat with any regularity demands that even accomplished anglers often have to step up their game. Which is why many of us who enjoy chasing carp consider them one of the most difficult fresh water game fish to consistently catch.
Although carp can be found in the lower stretches of many of our local rivers as well as a number of lakes and reservoirs we have found just a few stretches of river to produce the most consistant action and thus our trips are almost always float trips. Prime season for Carp angling is from July through early September – outside of this time period these fish become lethargic and become much harder to regularly catch on a fly.
